Gold Mornings -Once upon a time in Navi Mumbai .
A magical place, only when you leave this place you know you really don’t have to venture out for vacations 😂
This magical land can only survive if there is no more interference to its nature and the flora and fauna.
Being there for a year and a half, these are but pieces of those moments which I share for you to protect.
Other than the famous flamingos I was thrilled to study the whiskered terns . Oh boy they are something and it’s amazing to watch them hunt.
Aggressive Pack hunters they never seem to tire and its aerial acrobatics is a study in aerodynamics.

Both the camera and photographer are tested shooting fast small birds .

Shooting on film is even tougher since mid way they have an alacrity to dispense existing flight paths once they spot their unsuspecting prey from the corner of their eyes.

'The Phoenix of the Lake' - Those were the days when you had to climb out of the bed , groggy eyed wanting to sleep again, yet the vision in pink beckoned, for the tides were early that morning.
Had to reach the lake 2 hrs before high tide to see the flamingos landing in thousands. Having shot thousands and thousands of images of these creatures with wings of fire, one never gets bored surprisingly with nature's play.
In the darkness I wanted to capture the first flamingos as they land on to the lake.
You sneak out of the house tip toeing the passage ways, grabbing a packet of biscuits, water and a torch light. The limbs were pushed to walk faster on the Palm Beach road. The stars were still gleaming in the night. Arriving at the lake, I set up my chair, the tripod and mounted my camera and lens and awaited for the fire in the skies! Almost like waiting to catch auroras in the skies. You never know when its going to happen and being surprised is like a wave of smile hitting your heart.
The twilight started seeping away slowly for the night revealing the morning hues. The waters and the dried summer leaves took on the first rays of the sun, and the orange red fire flickering past, spreading, lighting up the havan kund of the lake (fire pit), awaiting the first offerings of its oblation.
And then lo, you see the fire descending slowly. The phoenix flew from the heavens silently touching the waters of the lake daintily with its pink feet and then resting into the warm lake bed. And that was 'satori' totally !
The first of the Greater flamingos had landed at TS Chanakya Lake, Navi Mumbai.
The light was magical and the wind softly nudged the waters of the lake to greet the celestial being from the heavens.
What the eyes and the heart experience in actuality of the single moment of fire surging through the body, words remain meaningless. Least expected!
When one goes without any expectation, one is more open to be wowed!

So last Sunday traveled 965 km to visit my favourite watering hole at TS Chanakya. It’s called ‘chooma’(simply) being in nature. ( note least expectation since tide swells were least in the middle of the lunar cycle.
That morning to my surprise I saw the colour wisps breaking through the clouds to form a splendorous cosmic bow , and an arrow of Greater flamingos piercing through the invisible constellations in the skies, @that precise moment, & I stood in wonderment
…’If man lets it be, nature will flourish in abandonment without concrete Buildings for play’

There a can be many arguments as to why we need development and more houses, more cars, more roads with the burgeoning population.
One remains myopic and can’t see the after effects on the Nature ecosystem.
Each one of us is now party to the problem. But true work happens only when the individual implements daily . The G20 and climate activists can only be shouting but in reality each one is blaming another .
The solution is evident - a mindset change which says No More exploitation of resources - Maintain status quo for another 10 years living in minimalist lifestyle mode. It’s possible
Something which the Covid Lockdown taught us & we all saw how Nature and wildlife came back into the cities. It’s a moratorium to oneself to become self conscious of our daily purchases from groceries to power, water , land etc .
We really don’t wish many years from now … to be left with Images, Relics and Milestones .
Civilisations survived on rivers and water and they died because of mis management of the same .

If we don’t Stop now … Implosion is bound to happen for that’s how the life forces work to allow the balance to be held. .

'The Mask is Back'- AQI levels in Navi Mumbai averaged 200-300 every day in Feb 2023, crossed the 400 mark today morning .
For a city population of 16 lakhs and low density traffic one can't imagine so much pollution.
The contributing factor to the current air pollution lies in the amount of dust generated from quarrying, blasting of the hills,( new airport development), building constructions, dumping of affluents into the lakes, rivers and the sea with complete disregard and apathy to their own fellowmen and own family members.

Today the man, woman and child on the streets will not realise the new silent killer lurking in their lungs.

The lungs are an efficient machine, but it starts adapting to environment changes and starts morphing into reduced lung power and efficiency. It has to work harder to flush out the toxins. Initially the body will react and one experiences coughing, sneezing and then the body becomes used to.
Once the body gets used to, the actual utilisation of a given lung capacity of 6 litres is now reduced possibly to 1/3rds, given that anyway the breathing itself is top of the chest only.

The lungs will work but there is a lot of huff and puff about it. To have good immunity, one needs to breathe in clean air to the very bottom of the lungs. We are aware that the morning air just before sunrise and an hour later is when the ionised air ( Prana) is at max and supposedly freshest.

But if one looks closely at the AQI graph over a month for Navi Mumbai, it's easy to realise that the levels actually go up in the night and continues to 8 -9 am in the morning, beside the fact that the day time also has sustained levels. Day time - Dust activity. Night time - Affluent activity, dumping into the sea.

Sleeping with the windows open is no more an option, nor breathing in the early morning Prana air without compromising the body immunity.

Background: The greater egrets and the painted stork kept looking at the winner obviously hoping to snatch away the fish in case it falls. Generally these creatures will be fishing on their own but this moment was so hilarious...they kept staring and staring as if this was the last fish on the earth! Totally in Shock & Awe
Shot at Navi Mumbai TS Chanakya lake where beside flamingos these guys also have a field day, if the lakes and the mangroves don't fall to our greed to have more homes built in eco sensitive zones.

At the Kala Ghoda art festival, Mumbai some of my large format 10 ft Flamingo art photos are on display at The Goethe , Max Mueller, Mumbai including some film clips .
Then at the Cross Maidan, Padma Shri Astad Deboo’s photos in large format is also on display .
Festival ends next Sunday.

Happy Republic Day - the 74th! We have come a long way.

Lesser flamingos puts on exclusive aerial displays when they try land in to the NMMC governed DPS lake of Navi Mumbai.
They come in from the shores as the high tide increases, into these lakes and I have noticed many a times that they take the turn somewhere near the flag post lining up to the lake.
Sometimes when they fly out also they sometime whizz past the flag.
A daily phenomenon to witness during the 6 month season in Navi Mumbai, provided this amazing habitat is protected together by the Republic and its citizens.

If the lake waters are held then the lesser flamingos can't land in and vice versa, if the water is allowed to drain out and inlet section is closed, the dry mudflats become unappetising for the flamingos. #navimumbai #lesserflamingo #flamingosofinstagram #yourshotphotographer #fujifilmxt3 #fujifilmxindia #birdsofinstagram #flamingosofnavimumbai #republicdayindia #74threpublicday #naturephotography #urbanwildlifephotography
